ALAS is a group whose purpose is to bring together all Latin Americans and all those in Swansea and surrounding areas interested in Latin American affairs. The main aims are to provide mutual support and to raise awareness of Latin America's cultural richness.

Membership

Membership of ALAS is open to all and costs
  • unwaged/part-time/student £3.50 per year
  • two unwaged/part-time/student in the same address £5.00 per year
  • waged £5.00 per year
  • two waged in the same address £8.00 per year
On presentation of their current membership card, ALAS members receive 10% off (sometimes 15% off) at various business in Swansea & Cardiff. For details please click here: Advantages of Membership 2009.

Events

ALAS events are held monthly, normally on the last Friday or Saturday of the month. Please ring the Social Secretary on 01792~891546 to check details.

Latin American Festival 12-13 February 2010

You are warmly invited to attend this year's Latin American Festival, featuring mainly Brazil, Chile & Colombia.

Talk by Dr Suranjit Saha, a Brazilianist, from Swansea University (Free)
Title: Brazil: An Emergent Giant of the 21st Century
(um gigante emergente do século XXI)
In this presentation, he will outline Brazil's cultural and economic strengths, provide a quick timeline of its fascinating history and explain why he thinks that Brazil will indeed emerge as a great nation in this new century, rivalling the United States, and be a strong player on the world stage.

Latin American Guitar Concert By Fernando Aguera (Brazilian), and Igor and Sylvia.

Latin-American Songs with Tony and Flaquito

Flaquito is a brilliant accordionist from New Zealand, who plays a variety of highly original versions of Latin American ballads inspired particularly by his travels in Colombia as part of Peace Brigades International.
Tony is a co-organiser of the ‘El Sueño Existe’ - Victor Jara Festival in Machynlleth, and performs songs by the great Chilean musician Victor Jara, as well as by Violeta Parra and Chile's forgotten folk genius, Rolando Alarcón.

The A.L.A.S. 2009 Festival raised £732 for charity. The charities we supported were:
